Saturday 3rd February 2018
After an amazingly smooth and easy journey to Altenmarkt yesterday, we were all ready for an early start this morning. A hearty breakfast was eaten at 7.30am and we left an hour later for the ten minute coach ride to Flachau where Fun & Pro fitted everyone with skis and boots in plenty of time for ski lessons to start at 10am.
The girls who had been on ski holidays before were soon making their way confidently up and down the valley slope whilst the newcomers made excellent progress on the beginners’ slopes. There was a light snow falling all morning and the resort looked very pretty with the fir trees laden with freshly fallen snow. The temperature was -3 degrees so not too cold at all when dressed in warm, cosy ski gear. The pistes were in excellent condition with plenty of soft powder to make the occasional tumble quite a fun and rather snowy experience!
We all piled into a very busy ‘Dampfkessel’ for lunch where a number of hot chocolates, plates of chips and spaghetti bolognaises were consumed as well as our picnic lunches from the hotel and before 1pm everyone was back out on the slopes and raring to go.
The ski instructors were so impressed with the girls’ skiing that three groups headed straight up in the chairlifts after lunch, each with a ski instructor and a member of staff, and enjoyed skiing higher up the mountain in wonderful conditions. The complete beginners continued to perfect their turns and snow ploughs on the nursery slopes and we hope that they too will be experiencing the chair lifts for the first time tomorrow.
As we write, we are back at the hotel showering and rehearsing for the High March Talent Show before we settle down for supper and a quiz evening.
It has been a fantastic first day and everyone is fit, healthy and happy and looking forward to our second day on the slopes tomorrow.
