Latin starts in Year 5 at High March.
Most girls study Latin in Year 5 and Year 6. Two half hour lessons per week are offered as part of the normal timetable. The basis for the programme of learning is the Cambridge Latin Course, Book 1, and the girls are given a firm grounding in vocabulary, grammar and classical background to prepare them for the Cambridge Latin Test for Book 1, which they take towards the end of their time at High March.
The lessons are stimulating and fun and the girls experience a real sense of achievement at being able to understand a language of which they had little or no previous knowledge.
They love finding the links with other languages and show a keen interest in learning about how life was lived at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius at Pompeii.
The girls find that their Latin at High March is both rewarding and enjoyable. It also provides an excellent preparation for continuing the subject at their senior schools and assists them hugely with their future language studies.
The few girls who do not take Latin in Year 5 benefit from an additional Maths and English lesson, whilst in Year 6 they follow a Classical Studies course to give them an understanding of life in ancient times.
