Pupils are taught in two parallel, mixed ability classes with a maximum class size of twenty. The average age in each class is roughly the same. Pupils benefit from a generous staffing ratio, each class being taught by a form teacher assisted by a full-time classroom assistant.
The Reception year, in which children turn five, is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage. This is the time when solid foundations are laid which serve as a base for all future learning.
In the Foundation Stage, there are seven areas of learning, which are divided into Prime and Specific areas of learning:
In Reception, pupils build on what they have learned in the Nursery. They have a wide range of opportunities for learning in all seven areas. They learn through creative play, both indoors and outdoors, as well as through more structured class based activities.
Girls learn to read and write using Synthetic Phonics and they use their phonic skills to support both their reading and writing. Children are heard to read individually every day and reading material is taken home in the evening. Children learn to write using a cursive script from the start. Each day includes some Literacy work as well as some Mathematics in the morning with Creative and Topic work in the afternoons.
Pupils enjoy a rich and varied curriculum and benefit from having specialist teachers for Music, P.E, Swimming, ICT and French. They visit many local places of interest such as Windsor Castle, Cotswold Wildlife Park and the Roald Dahl Gallery in Aylesbury. Girls also attend six sessions of Forest School in the Summer Term, which takes place at Shortenills Outdoor Activity Centre.
Pupils enjoy participating in the annual Nativity performance for parents and this is a very special date in the Reception calendar. Other annual events include Sports Day, our Art Exhibition, Harvest Festival, Christmas parties - to name a few!
At the end of Reception, the classes are mixed to help build a cohesive year group and to encourage girls to have a wide circle of friends.
