High March believes that Physical Education is essential in the development of the whole child. The School delivers a broad and inclusive programme of activities with particular emphasis on enjoyment, whilst encouraging all pupils to develop their individual potential to its maximum.
In the early years, activities are structured, through play and stimulating environments, to explore creative movements, physical fitness and small and large apparatus skills. This early development provides the foundation for the wide range of activities that follow. These include Netball, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming, Athletics, Tennis and Rounders.
Netball is extremely popular and we are proud of our achievements across the range of netball activities, from friendly matches to participation in the I.A.P.S. National Finals. There is fun netball available at lunchtimes, and throughout the summer, to include all the girls who wish to play. Teams play neighbouring schools and, wherever possible, a number of teams are selected for fixtures, to allow the widest participation.
Athletics takes place on a local track and all the girls represent their house team at the school's annual Sports Day. There are three separate Sports Days for Nursery, Junior House and Upper School.
We are delighted that our new, state-of-the-art swimming pool was completed in the Summer holidays 2009 and has been in use by all girls from Reception to Year 6 since the beginning of the Autumn term. Having our own pool will enable us to swim all year round and provides a permanent facility for the successful Swimming Squad. During the year the Swimming Teams (U8-U11) participate in a wide variety of local galas. In the last few years we have had a succession of excellent swimmers who have been selected to represent the County. We have also taken individual swimmers and a relay team to the I.A.P.S. National Swimming Championships.
In an environment of encouragement and enjoyment, Sport at High March helps to engender health, fitness, teamwork and a positive attitude to physical activity.
The School encourages a programme of clubs and activities during lunch times and after school ranging from Netball, Gymnastics and Short Tennis to Judo and Jazz Dance. There is a termly activity programme to inform parents and children.
Years 4, 5 and 6 have their own netball squads and there are regular training sessions both at lunchtime and after school to prepare for matches and local and national tournaments. Fun netball is available at lunchtimes both during the winter and the summer, to include all girls who wish to play.
Swimming Squad training sessions for Years 3 to 6 take place at our new, indoor pool two evenings a week. We have separate A and B Squads for Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6; we also run general swimming sessions for girls who are not part of the squads.
From Year 2 a gymnastics club is also offered to girls. This caters for all abilities and the girls work towards their British Gymnastics Proficiency Awards, using the apparatus in the School Gym, where appropriate.
For a number of extra-curricular activities, notably Judo, Ballet, Jazz Dancing and Short Tennis, external coaches come to High March so that the girls can benefit from specialist expertise.
